Engineering project coordinator job simulation: keep an engineering project on track
A project coordinator job simulation is a practice case in which you keep an engineering project organised. For a simulated electrical contractor you classify items into a RAID log, find the critical path when a vendor is late, work out earned value, turn a verbal request into a change request and write an honest status report. It is practice, not employment.
You join Corvane Engineering Projects Ltd (simulated company), a electrical and automation contractor in Birmingham. Days 1 to 5 are free, with about 10 h 40 min of tickets. Premium continues to day 20. It is practice, not employment.

The project
You join Corvane Engineering Projects Ltd (simulated company)
Corvane Engineering Projects Ltd (simulated company) is a electrical and automation contractor in Birmingham. You help its team deliver a project for Eastvale Power Distribution, at Hartley 33/11 kV primary substation (protection and SCADA upgrade).
You join the project office of Corvane Engineering Projects in week 7 of a 17 week upgrade of the protection and SCADA at the Hartley primary substation. In the first week the panel vendor tells you it is ten working days late, the sponsor asks for an extra feeder in an email, two meetings decide different things about the site acceptance test, and every status report so far has been green while the figures say otherwise. Over four weeks you classify the risks, work out the critical path and earned value, write change request CR-007, re-baseline the plan, handle a drawing revision mix-up on site, a near miss and a sponsor who wants a green gate, and hand over a pack that another coordinator can pick up. The pressure is on the dates; your job is to be accurate, early and honest.
What you will do
- Classify and score risks, assumptions, issues and dependencies in a RAID log
- Find the critical path and say what a late vendor does to the end date
- Work out earned value, forecasts and status colours that follow the figures
- Turn a sponsor's verbal request into a change request with cost, time and risk
- Keep documents, actions and a handover register straight, and report honestly under pressure

About the Engineering Project Coordinator role
The RAID log, and how to mark it
A RAID log is a register of risks, assumptions, issues and dependencies. Each entry needs an owner, a date and a next action, and each must sit in the right category.
You classify kick-off workshop items into the log, turn raw meeting notes into an action log and a confirmation email, and later check the status of every entry at handover. The pack includes a charter, a baseline schedule and a document control procedure to work from.
The classification matters, because a risk is managed differently from an issue.
The late vendor: critical path and what to say
When a panel vendor delivers late, the question is what it does to the end date. Only delays on the critical path move it, so you calculate the network from a file instead of guessing.
You find the effect, write an early-warning note to the project manager, and later write a steering paper on options to recover the delay. The response to a late vendor is to log it as an issue, confirm the new date in writing, assess dependent tasks and escalate with options.
The one page status report, before and after
A status report leads with the overall status, what changed, what is at risk and what decision is needed. The colour must follow the figures, not the mood.
You check weekly status colours against a rule, write the week's report honestly, and later review a draft that is too cheerful. A sponsor asking for green at a gate review is a decision case, and the correct response follows the earned value figures.
Writing it straight under pressure is the skill being tested.
Document register, transmittals and drawing revisions
Engineering projects live on drawings and revisions. A panel plate cut to a superseded drawing is a real-looking mistake in the pack, which you trace to the document control record.
You check a document register before it goes to the client, handle a change request with its cost, time and risk on one page, re-baseline the schedule, and finish a handover register. ISO 19650 is used as a model for information management, alongside the APM project life cycle and earned value practice.
Coordinator or certificate: what each shows
A recognised project management certificate takes months of study and proves you learned the method. A one week simulation proves you can apply a few parts of it to an engineering project, and gives you a pack to show.
The two complement each other. The related roles, quality engineer and AI business analyst, work with the same registers, and the linked free courses cover project management for engineers, planning and spreadsheet analysis.
Keep the RAID log, the status reports and the change request. They are compact examples of the weekly work of a project office, and they show you can report bad news calmly and in time.

Questions
Quick answers
What does a project coordinator do?
They keep a project organised: tracking actions, risks and documents, preparing status reports and chasing vendors. Postings list RAID log maintenance and status reporting.
What is a RAID log?
It is a register of risks, assumptions, issues and dependencies. Each entry needs an owner, a date and a next action.
What is the difference between a project coordinator and a project manager?
Coordinators support delivery and administration, and managers own scope, budget and decisions. Titles vary by company.
How do I write a status report?
Lead with the overall status, what changed, what is at risk and what decision you need, in one page. The simulation marks reports on those four points.
What do you do when a vendor is late?
Log it as an issue, confirm the new date in writing, assess the effect on dependent tasks and escalate with options. The simulation scores each step.
Is a project management certificate enough?
Certificates such as the Google one take several months of part-time study on a subscription, and one guide says they suit coordinators while advanced credentials carry more weight for experienced managers. A simulation shows applied work and does not replace a credential.
Source: Google Career Certificates, Project Management (opens in a new tab), checked 19 Oct 2026.
Which tools do coordinators use?
Spreadsheets and ticket or planning tools appear in postings. The simulation uses spreadsheets and documents, so no licence is needed.
What do project coordinators earn in the UK?
UK advertisements for project coordinators show a median salary of £30,000 over the six months to 19 October 2026. This is for IT vacancies only, and engineering roles in other sectors and countries differ.
Source: ITJobsWatch, Project Coordinator (UK IT vacancies) (opens in a new tab), checked 19 Oct 2026.
Do I need project management experience?
No. Each task gives you the documents, the formulas and the rule. The study links point to free lessons on project management, scheduling and spreadsheets.
Is this a real project and real data?
No. Corvane Engineering Projects and its client are made-up and the schedule and cost data are synthetic. The documents and situations follow what a junior project coordinator meets.
How long does it take?
The free week is about ten hours over five days. The full Premium edition runs over twenty working days and roughly thirty to thirty-five hours, at your own pace.
Which tools do I need?
A spreadsheet is enough. The answers are checked as numbers and choices, so any scheduling or analysis tool works too.
What do I get at the end?
A work record with your scores by task and skill, which shows on your EDWartens profile under Work experience, marked as a job simulation.
Is the Engineering Project Coordinator job simulation free?
Yes, to start. Days 1 to 5 are free. The certificate (£14.99) and the Premium edition (£53.99) are optional, and both prices include VAT.
Does it count as work experience?
No. It is a training project at a simulated company, not employment, an internship or a placement. A job simulation is a realistic training project at a simulated company. It is not employment, an internship or a work placement, and it is not a job offer. Hours are active hours the learner logged on EDWartens UK.
