Government badge or a deeper course?
Checked 24 October 2026
The government's AI Skills Boost, announced on 28 January 2026, is free to every UK adult. Its courses can take under 20 minutes and lead to a virtual AI foundations badge (gov.uk announcement). These courses are longer, from about 6 to 18 hours, and each is tied to one kind of job.
Pick the one closest to your job
- Any office job: AI Essentials for Work covers ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Copilot.
- Microsoft 365 users: Microsoft 365 Copilot and Agents.
- Projects: AI for Project Managers for planning, risk and reporting.
- Buying: AI for Procurement and Supply Chain.
- Design: AI for Electrical and MEP Design Engineers.
Each uses real tasks from that job and covers where AI must not be trusted, such as pasting confidential data into it or relying on invented facts. If you write code or PLC programs, see the AI courses for engineers.
What the courses teach
Each course uses tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot on real tasks from the job. You practise prompts built for the work, check the answers yourself, and learn where AI must not be trusted: pasting confidential data into it, relying on invented facts, or breaking professional rules. Generative AI is now built into the email, office and search tools most professionals use, so the risk is less about missing out and more about using it badly.
After the first course
If you write code or PLC programs, go on to the AI courses for engineers. If you are changing career, see free courses for career changers. The AI and data job simulations give you simulated workplace tasks to point to (practice, not employment). Courses are free to learn; the optional certificate is a certificate of completion, not an accreditation.
