Maintenance engineer and technician jobs with visa sponsorship in the UK

Some maintenance engineer and technician jobs can be sponsored for a Skilled Worker visa. The employer needs a Home Office licence, the job must be degree level or on the Temporary Shortage List, and the pay must meet the rate. Checked on 24 October 2026, that list includes 3113 engineering technicians (£42,500), 3112 electrical technicians (£39,300) and 5223 fitters (£39,300).

Rules at a glance, checked 24 October 2026

These are the Skilled Worker rules that matter for engineering jobs. They change, so read GOV.UK before you act. This is not immigration advice.

  • General salary threshold: £41,700 a year, or the going rate for the occupation code if that is higher.
  • Lower threshold: £33,400 can apply in some cases outside healthcare and education.
  • Skill level: since 22 July 2025 the route generally needs a job at RQF level 6 (degree level). Medium-skilled jobs (RQF 3 to 5) qualify only if they are also on the Temporary Shortage List and meet the salary rules.
  • Extensions: people whose first certificate of sponsorship was issued before 22 July 2025 can still apply for medium-skilled jobs.

Temporary Shortage List: engineering rows

Temporary Shortage List rows for engineering and electrical jobs, standard rate for a 37.5 hour week
SOCJob typeStandard rate
3112Electrical and electronics technicians£39,300
3113Engineering technicians£42,500
5223Metal working production and maintenance fitters£39,300

The list was published on 22 July 2025 and expires on 31 December 2026. The Migration Advisory Committee's report of 23 July 2026 recommends a smaller list (28 occupations instead of 52) for an initial 18 months. The government had not decided when we checked, and we could not confirm which engineering codes would stay. We update this page when it does.

203 jobs: from licensed sponsors or offering sponsorship

203 of these are from a licensed visa sponsor or say sponsorship is offered. A licence does not mean a particular job is sponsored: ask the employer. How the tags work.

What sponsored maintenance roles look like

By job title, the jobs above include 20 multi-skilled, 54 electrical, 26 mechanical, 93 technician, 8 supervisor or lead (a job can fit more than one count). This comes from the adverts on the board today, not from a sample.

Adverts across the board commonly ask for an electrical apprenticeship or NVQ Level 3 and manufacturing experience (checked 24 October 2026). Some employers state in the advert that they cannot sponsor, even large manufacturers, so a sector with many sponsors does not mean every employer in it sponsors.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Is maintenance technician on the Temporary Shortage List?

Maintenance work is not a single occupation code. Depending on the duties, the code can be 3113 engineering technicians, 3112 electrical and electronics technicians or 5223 metal working production and maintenance fitters, and all three were on the list when we checked on 24 October 2026. The employer chooses the code on the certificate of sponsorship and the Home Office checks it. The list expires on 31 December 2026 and its replacement was undecided when we checked.

What is the minimum salary for a sponsored maintenance job?

The general Skilled Worker threshold is £41,700 a year, or the going rate for the occupation code if that is higher. A lower threshold of £33,400 can apply in some cases outside healthcare and education. The standard rates we saw on the shortage list were £42,500 for 3113 and £39,300 for 3112 and 5223. Which figure applies to you depends on the code, the date and your circumstances, so check GOV.UK (checked 24 October 2026).

Can I switch from a student or graduate visa to a sponsored maintenance job?

Switching rules depend on the visa you hold and when you applied. We do not give immigration advice: read the Skilled Worker pages on GOV.UK, ask the employer what it needs from you, and speak to a regulated adviser if you are unsure.

Do night-shift maintenance roles count for the salary rules?

Shift work is common in maintenance. The Home Office checks your pay against the rate for a 37.5 hour week, and the GOV.UK guidance sets out which parts of pay count. Ask the employer how your offer is written, and do not assume that overtime or shift premiums count towards the threshold.

Sponsorship labels come from the advert's own words, the employer's own statement or the Home Office register of licensed sponsors. They are not a promise of a visa, and EDWartens does not sponsor visas.

UK employers must check that you have the right to work in the UK before you start. Ask the employer what it needs from you.
