The free TIA Portal courses

Start with the one that fits your time. Each is a separate free course with its own modules and final exam.

  • Siemens TIA Portal: the full free course, from project setup to the main instructions and HMI.
  • Siemens TIA Portal in three hours: a short first look.
  • Siemens TIA Portal S7-1200 tutorial series: a focused series on the S7-1200.
  • Further courses on SCL structured text, S7-1500, PID, WinCC and safety are listed under free Siemens courses.

What EDWartens gives, and what it does not

  • Gives: a study plan, notes, quizzes, practice tasks and a final exam for every free course, and a free browser PLC simulator in the EDWartens Lab for the ladder ideas.
  • Gives: for the Professional Module, live instruction in TIA Portal with PLCSIM, WinCC and Factory I/O, and a one-to-one resume session. The certificate states TIA Portal V17.
  • Does not give: Siemens certification or a Siemens exam. EDWartens is not affiliated with Siemens, and no course here is a Siemens course.
  • Does not give: a TIA Portal licence. Siemens sells licences and has offered a time-limited trial; confirm the current terms on Siemens Industry Online Support.
  • Does not give: a regulated qualification, or a promise of a job or interview. The free-course certificate is a certificate of completion. The Professional Module certificate is a CPD certificate.

What you need to run TIA Portal

TIA Portal runs on 64-bit Windows; it does not run on macOS or Linux, although people use a Windows virtual machine with enough memory. You do not need the software to watch the lessons or take the quizzes. For ladder practice without installing anything, use the browser simulator in the Lab.

Questions

Quick answers

Is there a free Siemens TIA Portal course in the UK?
Yes. EDWartens UK has several free TIA Portal courses with video lessons, notes, quizzes and a final exam. Learning is free; an optional verifiable certificate costs £19 including VAT when you pass.
Is the EDWartens course a Siemens course?
No. EDWartens is independent of Siemens. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Siemens, and it does not issue Siemens certification.
Is TIA Portal free to download?
Not permanently. Siemens sells TIA Portal licences and has offered a time-limited trial, 21 days in the guides we checked on 28 October 2026. Confirm current terms with Siemens. You can study the lessons without it.
Which TIA Portal course should I start with?
If you are new to PLCs, start with the PLC foundations path, which begins with the Siemens TIA Portal course. If you only want a first look, try the three-hour course.
Does the live Professional Module use TIA Portal?
Yes. It is a five-day live online class in Siemens TIA Portal covering PLC programming, HMI and WinCC SCADA, with PLCSIM and Factory I/O, followed by self-paced Basic Engineering modules.
Can I get a job with a TIA Portal course?
We cannot promise a job. Siemens appears in many UK PLC adverts, so TIA Portal skills are asked for, but employers also want evidence you can fault-find and work safely.
