Electrical engineer and electrician jobs with visa sponsorship in the UK

Some electrical engineer and electrician jobs can be sponsored for a Skilled Worker visa. Electricians (5241, £38,800) and electrical and electronic trades n.e.c. (5249, £45,800) were on the Temporary Shortage List when we checked on 24 October 2026. Electrical engineers at degree level (RQF 6) follow the general rules: £41,700 a year, or the going rate if higher.

Rules at a glance, checked 24 October 2026

These are the Skilled Worker rules that matter for engineering jobs. They change, so read GOV.UK before you act. This is not immigration advice.

  • General salary threshold: £41,700 a year, or the going rate for the occupation code if that is higher.
  • Lower threshold: £33,400 can apply in some cases outside healthcare and education.
  • Skill level: since 22 July 2025 the route generally needs a job at RQF level 6 (degree level). Medium-skilled jobs (RQF 3 to 5) qualify only if they are also on the Temporary Shortage List and meet the salary rules.
  • Extensions: people whose first certificate of sponsorship was issued before 22 July 2025 can still apply for medium-skilled jobs.

The list was published on 22 July 2025 and expires on 31 December 2026. The Migration Advisory Committee's report of 23 July 2026 recommends a smaller list (28 occupations instead of 52) for an initial 18 months. The government had not decided when we checked, and we could not confirm which engineering codes would stay. We update this page when it does.

What sponsored electrical roles look like

By job title, the jobs above include 22 electrician, 52 engineer, 9 controls, instrument or automation, 1 graduate, trainee or junior (a job can fit more than one count). This comes from the adverts on the board today, not from a sample.

Graduates. Graduate electrical and controls engineering jobs are degree level (RQF 6), so they follow the general rules rather than the shortage list. Some graduate schemes say they cannot sponsor, so read each advert.

No experience. Sponsorship needs a licensed employer, an eligible code and the minimum pay. Treat adverts that promise sponsorship for electricians with no experience with caution.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Can an electrician get visa sponsorship with no UK experience?

It is difficult. The employer needs a Home Office licence, the job needs an eligible occupation code and pay at the rate, and the employer has to be willing to sponsor someone who has not yet worked in the UK. Treat adverts that promise electrician sponsorship with no experience with caution, check the employer on the Home Office register, and never pay for a job or for a certificate of sponsorship.

Is an electrical engineer eligible for a Skilled Worker visa?

Electrical engineering jobs are normally at degree level (RQF 6), so they can qualify under the general rules without the shortage list, provided the employer is licensed, the job fits its occupation code and the pay is at least £41,700 a year or the going rate for the code if higher. A lower threshold of £33,400 can apply in some cases. This is not immigration advice (rules checked 24 October 2026).

What qualifications do UK employers ask for?

Adverts for electricians and maintenance electricians commonly ask for an electrical apprenticeship or NVQ Level 3 and the current wiring regulations (BS 7671). Engineering roles more often ask for a degree or HNC and experience. Every advert differs, so read the requirements on the employer's own page before you apply.

Is a sponsor licence the same as a job offer?

No. A licence means the Home Office has allowed the employer to sponsor workers. It does not mean the employer has a vacancy for you, or that any particular job is sponsored. Ask the employer in writing, and keep the reply.

Sponsorship labels come from the advert's own words, the employer's own statement or the Home Office register of licensed sponsors. They are not a promise of a visa, and EDWartens does not sponsor visas.

UK employers must check that you have the right to work in the UK before you start. Ask the employer what it needs from you.

The EDWartens job board is free for jobseekers and always will be: seeing jobs, applying and joining the talent pool never need a purchase, and we never charge candidates. Jobs read from other sites are written by other people. We do not promise any interview or job.
