FAQ

Questions people ask

Automation engineer or controls engineer: what is the difference?

In industry the titles overlap a lot. A controls engineer usually focuses on the control system of a machine or plant (PLC, drives, instruments), and an automation engineer on automating a process or line, which can include robots and software around the controls. Read the duties in the advert, not only the title.

Is test automation the same as industrial automation?

No. Test automation (QA automation) is software testing, and project controls is planning and cost control. Both use similar words. We filter them out of this page, but check the duties if a title looks unusual.

Do I need a degree to be an automation engineer?

Many adverts ask for a degree or HNC in electrical, electronic or mechatronic engineering, and others accept a strong maintenance or electrical background with PLC experience. Junior and trainee roles exist. See the trainee and entry-level jobs page for the routes in.

Which sectors hire automation and controls engineers?

The adverts we read come from sectors including pharmaceuticals, water, nuclear, food and drink, and general manufacturing. Sector shapes the standards you will work to, so look at what the employers on this page make.
