Engineering work experience for career changers

No engineering job yet? You can still practise the work. Pick a role, do days 1 to 5 of its simulated project (around ten hours, free, no card) and finish with checked work to talk about at interview. It is a simulation, not a placement, and it does not promise a job.

The problem

No job without experience, no experience without a job

Job adverts ask for experience, and nobody hires you to get it. That is the trap career changers describe most.

A job simulation does not break it, and it is not a placement. What it gives you is specific: a project you did, work that was checked, and decisions you can explain. That is easier to talk about than a general interest.

Step 1

Pick a role by where you start

These five suit people moving in from another job. Each free week is around ten hours.

Step 2

A five-day plan: the PLC Programmer free week

This is the real order of tickets in days 1 to 5 of one role, set at Tarnbrook Controls Ltd (simulated company). Other roles follow the same pattern: an email each morning, tickets with acceptance lines, checking and a model answer.

Days 1 to 5 of the PLC Programmer job simulation
DayTickets
Day 1
  • Site induction and project standards (45 min)
  • Clarification queries on the URS (1 h)
Day 2
  • Review FDS Rev B against the URS (1 h 20 min)
Day 3
  • I/O list, section B (1 h 20 min)
  • Scale the bowl level and set the wire-break limit (50 min)
Day 4
  • Cause and effect matrix (1 h 10 min)
  • A small favour from the client's supervisor (35 min)
Day 5
  • Count bottles once each and finish the batch (1 h 30 min)
  • Fill the bowl between two levels without running dry (1 h 20 min)

Step 3

What to show an interviewer

Describe it accurately: a job simulation at a simulated company, under projects or training.

  • Your work record, with your scores by task and the dates. It is yours to share.
  • One finished piece of work you can walk through, such as an I/O list, an isolation certificate review or a close-out note.
  • One decision you made under pressure and why, for example refusing a request that would bypass a safety rule.
  • The simulated company named, and the words job simulation. Interviewers value accuracy.
  • What the project showed you that you do not know yet, and what you will do about it.

Pieces of work you finish, by role

  • PLC Programmer: URS clarification queries; I/O list, section B; Cause and effect matrix.
  • Maintenance Technician: Safe isolation steps in order; Review of a motor starter drawing; A job card with cause, parts and downtime.
  • OT Security Analyst: OT asset inventory with level and criticality; Observed network flows judged against the zone rules; Firewall rule review findings.
  • Data Analyst: Data profile of the four source files; Reconciliation of orders: shop system against finance; Review comments on the repeat-rate SQL query.
  • Engineering Project Coordinator: RAID log classified from kick-off notes; Action log from two meetings; Minutes and confirmation email.

Step 4

Free first, then optional extras

Days 1 to 5 are free and need no card. If you want a graded, verifiable record, the certificate is £14.99 including VAT. Premium (days 1 to 20, an engineer-reviewed capstone, certificate included) is £53.99. The matching simulations are included with each paid EDWartens course.

Certificate, optional

If you need the basics first, the free PLC, electrical and AI courses link to the same practice labs.

Questions

Quick answers

Will employers accept it?
We cannot speak for employers, and we do not promise a job or an interview. It is training at a simulated company, not employment. Some employers will be interested in the specific work you can show and explain. Describe it accurately and let them decide.
Do I need a degree?
No. Nothing asks for a degree to start. Some roles are easier with basics, and the job simulations page marks the ones that need no experience at all.
How long does the free week take?
About ten hours of tickets across five working days, depending on the role. It is self-paced, so a day opens when you hand in the previous day's tickets.
Can I do it while working?
Yes. It is self-paced with no deadline, and most people fit it into evenings and weekends. Hands-on tasks in EDWartens Lab are easiest on a laptop.
What next after day 5?
You can stop with your checked work and record, add the £14.99 certificate, or continue to Premium (days 1 to 20, £53.99, certificate included). Then look at live UK jobs and apply with the work in hand.

A job simulation is a realistic training project at a simulated company. It is not employment, an internship or a work placement, and it is not a job offer. Hours are active hours the learner logged on EDWartens UK.
