Maintenance engineer with no experience: practise before you apply

You can start a maintenance engineer career before you have a job to point to. The usual UK routes are an apprenticeship, a college course or an entry job with training. While you look, practise the work online: four free projects on safe isolation, fault finding, work orders and planned maintenance. It is practice, not employment.

The route in

How people become maintenance engineers in the UK

There is no single route, and requirements vary by employer. These are the common ones.

Apprenticeship

You are employed and trained at once. Competition for places can be strong, and an application may ask what you have done to learn about the job.

College course

A full-time or part-time engineering or electrical course gives you a qualification and workshop time. Check what the course leads to and what employers in your area ask for.

Entry job with training

Some employers hire technicians or trainees and train them on the job. Read each advert: requirements vary by employer.

When this page was last refreshed, 2264 live UK maintenance and electrical technician jobs were on our board. Read a few and note what repeats: qualifications, experience, shift patterns and the systems named. Those are the things to practise and to ask about.

Four practice projects

Free first weeks you can do before you apply

Each is a project at a simulated company, with every task checked. Start with the Maintenance Technician if you have no experience.

A sample ticket

Isolation with a buddy: the senior is called away

This is the public text of a real day 5 ticket in the Maintenance Technician simulation. Nobody tells you the answer, and the model answer shows once you have tried. Planned maintenance and the maintenance system come later in the week: for example you close out a work order the way a planner will enter it.

MHP-109 A real ticket · about 40 min

The senior is called away: what do you do?

Raised by: Senior Maintenance Technician, Millhaven Polymers Ltd (simulated company), from the Maintenance Technician job simulation

You are halfway through preparing for a job on IM-04. The senior technician had planned to isolate the machine with you. He has been called to an urgent problem in another building. The shift leader says the job is only a mould temperature controller and you could just flick the switches and lock them yourself. You are not yet authorised. Decide what you do and what you say. Use the stop-and-ask procedure.

Acceptance

  • You do not isolate alone.
  • You tell the right people and keep the machine safe.

TKL-108 Work order close-out · about 60 min

Close out work order WO-2026-031921

Raised by: Maintenance Planner, Thornacre Kitchens Ltd (simulated company), from the Multi-skilled Maintenance Engineer job simulation

Turn your notes from the CP-4 pusher repair into the close-out the Planner will enter in the CMMS: the fault, the cause code, the work done, the parts and their cost, the labour, the downtime and the tests. Add one sentence recommending what prevents a repeat. The Planner uses these entries for cause analysis, cost reports and spares ordering, so give numbers and keep opinions out. Your notes are in the document.

Acceptance

  • The close-out matches your notes: no invented facts.
  • Cause, parts, labour and downtime are all present.
  • Isolation of both energy sources is stated correctly.

Hands-on

Lock out, prove dead and bring it back

The panel lab in EDWartens Lab is where you practise isolation: lock out a motor starter at the main isolator, prove it dead (live, dead, live), make the change and restore the power safely. It is free to try. Open the control panel lab.

Practice, not authorisation

Practising the order of safe isolation online teaches the habit. It does not authorise you to isolate real equipment. That needs training, assessment and your employer's authorisation.

Included with courses

Where the simulations sit in the paid courses

The Allen-Bradley Module includes the Maintenance Technician and Multi-skilled Maintenance Engineer simulations at Premium level. The Professional Module includes Maintenance Electrical Engineer and Multi-skilled Maintenance Engineer, and the Siemens Module includes Maintenance Electrical Engineer. You do not need a course to start the free week.

Questions

Quick answers

Can I become a maintenance engineer without a qualification?
Some entry roles train you on the job, but many adverts ask for a relevant qualification or experience, so read each one. A simulation shows interest and understanding. It is not a qualification, and it does not replace an apprenticeship.
What qualifications do UK maintenance adverts ask for?
It varies by employer and role. The most reliable check is the live adverts on our maintenance jobs page: read a few and note what repeats, then practise that.
Do simulations replace an apprenticeship?
No. A simulation is training at a simulated company. It cannot give you site contact, supervision or a recognised qualification. Use it to learn, to prepare for applications and to have something specific to discuss.
Which standards matter for safe maintenance work?
The four simulations name HSG85 (electricity at work, safe working); GS38 (electrical test equipment); Electricity at Work Regulations 1989; PUWER 1998; HSG253 (safe isolation of plant and equipment); BS 7671 (awareness); BS 7671; IEC 60364. PUWER 1998 covers work equipment, and safe isolation is the habit that runs through all four. They are named so you know them. Always read the current edition of anything you rely on.
Is it free?
Days 1 to 5 of each of the four simulations are free, with no card. The certificate and Premium are optional.

A job simulation is a realistic training project at a simulated company. It is not employment, an internship or a work placement, and it is not a job offer. Hours are active hours the learner logged on EDWartens UK.
