SCADA Training in the UK: WinCC vs Ignition vs AVEVA

WinCC, Ignition and AVEVA are all established SCADA platforms, and the best one to learn first is the one your target employers run. ITJobsWatch counted 632 permanent UK adverts citing SCADA in the six months to 21 October 2026, with a median salary of £55,000. This guide compares the three neutrally and shows how to start free.

Key takeaways

  • ITJobsWatch counted 632 permanent UK adverts citing SCADA in the six months to 21 October 2026, up from 242 a year earlier, with a median of £55,000.
  • Learn the platform your target employers run: WinCC for Siemens PLC estates, Ignition for mixed-vendor or IT-minded sites, AVEVA where it is already installed.
  • Ignition is sold per server, and Inductive Automation offers a free trial download, so you can practise without buying a licence.
  • Siemens' SITRAIN UK site lists a WinCC Unified 1 system course with V18, V19 and V20 curricula; prices are by quotation.
  • EDWartens covers WinCC SCADA on days 4 and 5 of a five-day live course (£2,568 inc VAT); Ignition and AVEVA are covered in free courses only.

Siemens WinCC, Inductive Automation's Ignition and AVEVA (formerly Wonderware) are all credible SCADA platforms, so the right one to learn first is the one your target employers already run. Siemens-based plants point to WinCC, mixed-vendor and IT-minded sites often point to Ignition, and sites with older installations may use AVEVA. According to ITJobsWatch, 632 permanent UK adverts cited SCADA in the six months to 21 October 2026, with a median advertised salary of £55,000.

What does SCADA training actually teach?

SCADA training teaches you to build and maintain the supervisory layer that sits above PLCs. In practice that means tags (the named data points), operator screens, alarms and events, trends and historical data, user permissions and the communications that link everything to controllers.

Those ideas are the same on every platform. What differs is the engineering environment, the licensing model and how tightly the software is tied to one PLC brand. If you are new to the distinction between the controller and the supervisory system, start with our explainer on PLC vs SCADA, then work through the SCADA tutorial for beginners.

How do WinCC, Ignition and AVEVA compare?

They overlap heavily but come from different traditions. The table uses each vendor's own descriptions; the last column is our editorial view, not vendor data.

How the vendor describes itVisualisation from single-machine HMI up to complex SCADA; WinCC Unified PC is described as scalable, open SCADA software within TIA PortalServer software connecting plant equipment and SQL databases, covering SCADA, HMI, alarming and reporting; built on SQL, Python, OPC UA and MQTTSystem Platform for SCADA, MES and IIoT; InTouch HMI for operator visualisation; Edge (formerly Indusoft Web Studio) for HMI/SCADA

Two cautions. AVEVA calls InTouch the world's most widely used plant HMI, which is a vendor claim rather than independent data. And Siemens lists several WinCC families on its offerings page, including WinCC Unified and WinCC V8, so "WinCC" on a job advert can mean different generations.

Which SCADA platform do UK employers actually use?

Nobody publishes reliable UK market-share figures by product, and ITJobsWatch does not split SCADA adverts by vendor. What the data does show is the shape of the market. In the six months to 21 October 2026, ITJobsWatch recorded 632 permanent UK adverts citing SCADA, against 242 in the same period of 2025. The median salary was £55,000, with a 10th percentile of £39,500 and a 90th percentile of £80,000.

The skills that appear alongside SCADA are telling. Degree appeared in 47.2% of those adverts (298), preventative maintenance in 31.0% (196), NVQ Level 3 in 26.1% (165) and mechatronics in 21.4% (135). Read that as a market where SCADA is often one skill within a maintenance or engineering role rather than a standalone software job. ITJobsWatch leans towards IT-flavoured vacancies and the samples are modest, so treat it as direction, not precision.

The practical method is free and takes about half an hour: open 20 adverts in the sector you want and tally the product names. That beats any generic ranking.

Introduction to Ignition SCADA

Should you learn WinCC or Ignition first?

Choose by where you will work, not by which tool is fashionable. Use this as a starting rule and test it against real adverts.

  • Learn WinCC first if the sites you are targeting run Siemens S7 PLCs, or if you are already learning TIA Portal. The PLC and the SCADA project live in one engineering tool, which is a gentler way to learn how tags map to PLC data. Our Siemens TIA Portal course guide covers that route.
  • Learn Ignition first if you want a platform you can install on your own laptop, if you are comfortable with databases or scripting, or if your target employers run mixed PLC brands. Inductive Automation offers a free trial download, so you can practise without a purchase.
  • Learn AVEVA first only if you know your employer or sector uses it. AVEVA names oil and gas, power and utilities, manufacturing and food and beverage among the industries its software serves, so ask about it if you are aiming there.

If you do not yet have a target, learn the concepts on a free platform, then add a second product. Employers care that you can explain tags, alarms and trends and that you can pick up their system quickly.

What SCADA training can you get in the UK?

There are four realistic routes, and they suit different budgets.

  1. Vendor training. Siemens' SITRAIN UK site lists a SIMATIC WinCC Unified 1 system course, with curriculum versions for V18, V19 and V20. Its course search shows it as three days. Prices are by quotation, so ask for one.
  2. Inductive Automation resources. Its website lists training and certification options. Check its current pages for details, as we have not verified levels or costs.
  3. Free courses and simulators. We publish free courses on Ignition SCADA, Wonderware InTouch, Siemens WinCC SCADA and WinCC HMI in TIA Portal. The browser-based process control simulator and OT security simulator need no install.
  4. Instructor-led online or in-person courses, such as our Professional Module below.

A free route to your first SCADA project

Follow this order rather than a timetable; people progress at different speeds.

  1. Learn the vocabulary: tags, alarms, trends, historian, runtime versus development.
  2. Practise logic on the free PLC simulator so you understand the data a SCADA screen displays.
  3. Build one small project in a free trial or free course: a tank and pump with a level tag, two alarms and a trend.
  4. Rebuild the same project on a second platform. Seeing the same idea in two tools is what makes you adaptable.
  5. Write up the project with screenshots. Employers reading a trainee application respond well to something concrete, as our trainee PLC jobs guide explains.

How does the engineering experience differ?

The day-to-day workflow differs more than the concepts. In WinCC Unified the visualisation is engineered inside TIA Portal, the same tool used for the S7 PLC, so the PLC and the visualisation share one engineering environment. Ignition is installed on a server; Inductive Automation says clients are web-deployed with no per-client charge, and that the platform is built on SQL, Python, OPC UA and MQTT. AVEVA splits the job across products, with System Platform at the supervisory layer and InTouch for operator screens.

None of that makes one platform harder in principle. It does change what you practise: Siemens learners spend time on PLC-to-HMI integration, Ignition learners on databases, scripting and device connections.

What do SCADA interviewers ask?

Expect questions that test understanding, not button-clicking. Common themes in controls interviews include how you would structure a tag naming convention, how you would stop an alarm flood (priorities, deadbands, shelving), what happens to screens when communication with a PLC is lost, how you would store and trend historical data, and who should be allowed to acknowledge alarms or change set points. Our PLC interview questions cover the controller side, and the HMI design guide covers screen standards.

Being able to describe a small project you built, and what you would improve, is more persuasive than listing software names.

What mistakes do beginners make when learning SCADA?

Four mistakes come up repeatedly:

  • Learning screens before data. A pretty overview is worthless if the tags are poorly named or scaled wrongly. Get the data model right first.
  • Ignoring alarms. Beginners add alarms for everything. Real operators ignore noisy alarm lists, so practise choosing which few matter.
  • Skipping security. SCADA systems connect to networks. The OT security simulator is a safe place to see why default passwords and flat networks are risks.
  • Stopping at one platform. Employers change systems. Showing you can move a project between tools signals adaptability.

How EDWartens can help

Days 4 and 5 of our five-day live online Professional Module cover WinCC SCADA: tags, graphics, animation, alarms and events, trending and historical data, and a project review. Days 1 to 3 cover TIA Portal, S7 PLC hardware, ladder logic and HMI projects. It costs £2,140 + VAT (£2,568), with a £100 deposit option, and carries a CPD certificate (80 credits, The CPD Group).

Be aware of the limits. The course is Siemens-focused, the certificate states TIA Portal V17 while SITRAIN lists newer WinCC Unified curricula (V18 to V20), and Ignition and AVEVA are covered only in our free courses. Frequently asked questions

Is WinCC or Ignition better to learn first?

Neither is better in general. WinCC suits sites running Siemens PLCs and is engineered in TIA Portal, while Ignition is a server-licensed platform with a free trial download that works across PLC brands. Check 20 adverts in your target sector, tally the products named, and learn the most common one first.

How much do SCADA jobs pay in the UK?

ITJobsWatch showed a median advertised salary of £55,000 for permanent UK jobs citing SCADA in the six months to 21 October 2026, with a 10th percentile of £39,500 and a 90th percentile of £80,000. It is an IT-leaning index with small samples, so treat the figures as indicative rather than exact.

Can I learn SCADA for free?

Yes, at least the fundamentals. Inductive Automation offers a free Ignition trial download, EDWartens publishes free courses on Ignition, Wonderware InTouch and WinCC SCADA, and free browser simulators let you practise PLC logic and process control without installing anything. You will still need practice on whichever platform your employer uses.

Is AVEVA the same as Wonderware?

AVEVA says Wonderware InTouch, System Platform, Historian and MES are now AVEVA solutions, describing the change as a name change for the same software. Older job adverts and engineers may still say Wonderware, so search for both names when looking for vacancies or training.

Does the EDWartens course teach Ignition?

No. The paid Professional Module is Siemens-focused and covers WinCC SCADA on days 4 and 5, with a certificate stating TIA Portal V17. Ignition and Wonderware InTouch are covered in separate free courses at edwartens.co.uk/free-courses, which are a sensible way to see a second platform.

HMI Design Best Practices: ISA-101 and High-Performance HMI

Good HMI design follows a lifecycle (philosophy, style guide, templates, testing), uses restrained colour so abnormal conditions stand out, and manages alarms to HSE and EEMUA targets of no more than one alarm every ten minutes on average. ISA-101 is the international standard behind it.
