The role
What a data centre engineer does, and what is on this page
Data centre engineers and technicians keep the building running so the servers can: high-voltage and low-voltage distribution, UPS batteries and generators, chillers and air handling, fire detection and the building management system (BMS), plus planned maintenance, testing and fault response. Titles include critical facilities engineer, mechanical and electrical (M&E) engineer, data centre technician and data centre maintenance engineer.
We filter on the job title for data centre or critical-environment wording and exclude sales, data engineer, cloud, network and IT support roles, which use the same words for different work. Most data centres run round the clock, so adverts state a shift pattern: read it before you apply.

FAQ
Questions people ask
What does a data centre engineer do?
A data centre engineer keeps the electrical, mechanical and building management systems of a data hall working: power distribution, UPS and generators, cooling, BMS and fire detection. The day is planned maintenance, testing, monitoring alarms and responding to faults, usually as part of a shift team. It is a facilities job, not IT support.
What is the salary of a data centre engineer in the UK?
The median pay advertised for data centre engineer roles was £60,000 (£46,250 a year earlier), from 150 permanent adverts in the six months to 28 October 2026 (against 35 in the period ITJobsWatch compares it with). The middle 80% of quoted salaries ran from £40,000 to £100,000, across 81 adverts that quoted one. Advert-based, IT-category sample. (ITJobsWatch, 28 October 2026.) Pay varies with sector, shift pattern and region, and a job card on this page shows pay only when the advert states it: we never estimate it.
Do I need IT skills to work in a data centre?
Most facilities roles ask for electrical, mechanical or BMS skills, not IT support. You will work next to IT teams and need to understand what a power or cooling fault does to the servers, and some adverts ask for basic networking or DCIM software. Read each advert's requirements.
How do I move from electrical maintenance into a data centre?
The skills carry over: safe isolation, switchgear, motors and drives, and fault finding on live plant. Add the data centre specifics (UPS, generators, critical power, cooling and BMS), which the free data centre courses and the job simulation cover as practice, and look at what each advert asks for. Nothing on this page promises a job.
Is a data centre job 4 on 4 off?
Some data centres run 24-hour shift patterns such as 4 on 4 off, others recruit for days with on-call cover, and the pattern varies by site. The advert should say which, and how shift allowances are paid.
Can a data centre engineer get a Skilled Worker visa?
2123 electrical engineers is a higher-skilled occupation: it does not need the Temporary Shortage List. The general rules apply: £41,700 a year or the going rate for the code, whichever is higher. 3112 electrical and electronics technicians is a medium-skilled occupation that is on the Temporary Shortage List (standard rate £39,300), which expires on 31 December 2026. The Migration Advisory Committee recommended keeping it for 18 months more (23 July 2026); the government had not decided when we checked. 3113 engineering technicians is a medium-skilled occupation that is on the Temporary Shortage List (standard rate £42,500), which expires on 31 December 2026. The Migration Advisory Committee recommended keeping it for 18 months more (23 July 2026); the government had not decided when we checked. A sponsor licence is not a promise of sponsorship for this job, and whether a particular job qualifies depends on its duties, its occupation code and its pay, which the employer and the Home Office decide. You should never pay an employer or agent for a job or for sponsorship. This is not immigration advice (rules checked 28 October 2026).
