IATF 16949 Automotive QMS and Internal Auditing

This free course explains what IATF 16949 adds to ISO 9001 for automotive suppliers and how to audit it from the inside. You work with customer specific requirements, turtle diagrams, product safety, supplier and production controls, change control and problem solving, then plan a risk-based audit programme, interview on the shop floor, follow audit trails through the core tools and write graded nonconformities. It suits quality engineers and internal auditors in UK automotive supply chains. It builds internal auditor knowledge only.

Outcome

What you will be able to do

Explain how IATF 16949:2016 is used with ISO 9001 and what it adds; find and apply customer specific requirements; draw turtle diagrams and test automotive risk analysis, product safety and contingency plans; check competence, calibration and laboratory evidence; audit design and development, suppliers, production controls, change control and nonconforming product; read control charts, capability and gauge studies in an audit; follow a problem-solving report from containment to verified corrective action; and plan, run and report an internal audit with the system, manufacturing process and product audit types, writing graded nonconformity statements.

  • Explain how IATF 16949:2016 is used with ISO 9001 and what customer specific requirements and Sanctioned Interpretations are
  • Draw a turtle diagram and test automotive risk analysis, product safety and contingency plans
  • Check competence, calibration and laboratory evidence, and handle a gauge found out of tolerance
  • Follow a special characteristic from the drawing through FMEA, control plan and part approval
  • Audit supplier control, setup verification, error-proofing, total productive maintenance and change control
  • Read a control chart, Cp and Cpk and a gauge study, and ask whether the data can be trusted
  • Run a problem-solving report from containment to a verified corrective action
  • Build a risk-based audit programme with system, manufacturing process and product audits, and write graded nonconformity statements

Questions

About this course

Last reviewed 1 November 2026.

Will this qualify me as a third-party IATF auditor?
No. Third-party IATF 16949 auditors are qualified through IATF-approved routes run by the oversight offices, which is SMMT in the UK. This course builds the knowledge an internal or second-party auditor uses inside a supplier.
Do I need to know ISO 9001 first?
It helps. The course teaches only what IATF 16949 adds, so the ISO 9001 clauses are not taught again. If they are new to you, start with our free ISO 9001 course, then come back to this one.
What is the £19 certificate worth?
It is an optional EDWartens certificate of completion, £19 including VAT, that lists the modules and your final score on a public page. It is not an IATF or certification body credential and is not accredited. The learning stays free.
What is the IATF 16949 internal auditing course?
It is a free-to-learn course on what IATF 16949 adds to ISO 9001 for car parts plants and on how to audit those additions. One car parts plant in Monterrey runs through every module, from customer requirements to graded nonconformity statements.
Who is this course for?
Quality engineers, supplier quality engineers, production engineers, quality coordinators and students heading into automotive manufacturing. Knowing what ISO 9001 is helps. No auditing experience is needed.
Which edition of IATF 16949 does it teach?
It teaches IATF 16949:2016, the edition certified against. The IATF Global Oversight site was checked on 1 November 2026: it shows that a revision is under way and that the 6th Edition of the Rules for achieving and maintaining IATF recognition took effect on 1 January 2025. Check that site and your certification body for transition dates.
Does it re-teach ISO 9001?
No. It assumes you know what ISO 9001 asks for and teaches what the automotive standard adds: customer specific requirements, product safety, contingency plans, laboratory and calibration rules, supplier and change control, error-proofing, TPM and the three audit types. The ISO 9001 course on this site covers the base clauses.
Will it make me an IATF 16949 auditor?
No. It gives internal auditor knowledge only. Third-party IATF auditors are qualified through IATF-approved certification bodies, and this course does not lead to that qualification. Its certificate is a verifiable certificate of completion from EDWartens, not an auditor credential.
Does it cover APQP, PPAP, FMEA and SPC in depth?
It shows how an auditor checks them, using one worked plant. The methods themselves are taught in the courses on APQP, control plan and PPAP, on automotive FMEA and on SPC and MSA, which this course points to.
How long does it take, and is it free?
About 9 hours of video and around 14 hours in total with the notes, worked problems and the optional project, at your own pace. Every module, the notes, the optional audit project and the final assessment are free to learn.
What certificate do I get?
A verifiable certificate of completion, issued when you finish the modules and pass the 15-question final at 60 percent. It has a unique certificate number, a QR code and a public verification page that shows the course, the modules covered and your final score.
