Outcome

What you will be able to do

Describe how UK water companies are regulated and what AMP8 funds, trace the stages of drinking water and sewage treatment, choose suitable flow, level and analytical instruments, explain flow-paced dosing, describe telemetry and SCADA architecture, write a pump station control narrative with duty/standby, know what WIMES is for, and apply confined space safety principles.

  • Explain who regulates water in England and Wales and what AMP8 is
  • Trace drinking water and sewage treatment stages
  • Choose flow, level and analytical instruments for water applications
  • Describe flow-paced chemical dosing with residual trim
  • Explain telemetry, RTUs and SCADA, including report by exception
  • Write a duty/standby pumping station control narrative
  • Apply confined space and hazardous atmosphere safety principles

EDWartens Lab

Practise this in the EDWartens Lab

Run dosing, level and duty/standby pump loops in the Lab's process simulator.

Works alongside Water Industry Automation (UK). The Lab is process control practice in your browser: no install, no hardware, free to use. Sign in as a learner and it opens with your account.

Process control: Tune a real process loop.

Levels to try with this course

Optional. Skip it whenever you like: it never blocks your progress or your certificate.

Why practise in a lab

Technical work is judged on what you can do: wiring, commissioning, finding a fault. Doing a task yourself teaches more than watching it a second time, and a lab lets you try it safely before you meet real equipment. It does not replace working on real hardware.

  • Practise safely, so a mistake costs nothing.
  • The lab checks your work like a site test, so you know when it is right.
  • Free, in your browser, with nothing to install.

Certificate

An optional certificate when you pass

Learning is free. Pass the final exam and you can have a certificate for £19, including VAT, with a number employers can check online. It records that you completed a free online course; it is not a regulated qualification or a CPD certificate.

  • Your name, the course, its study time and your final exam score
  • A unique certificate number and a QR code to its verification page
  • Issued by Wartens Ltd; add it to your LinkedIn profile in one click
  • Pay now or after you pass: it is issued the moment you pass the final

Questions

About this course

What is AMP8?
AMP8 is the eighth Asset Management Period, the five-year investment cycle for water and sewerage companies in England and Wales from April 2025 to March 2030. Ofwat's final determinations in December 2024 supported a very large programme of about £104 billion. Figures and regulation are still developing, so check current sources.
What is WIMES?
WIMES stands for Water Industry Mechanical and Electrical Specifications. They are technical specifications used by UK water companies for items such as pumps, motors, LV installations and chemical dosing equipment. The course explains what WIMES is for, but you need access to the current documents through an employer or supplier for detailed work.
Is this specific to England?
The course focuses on England and Wales, with a note on Scotland and Northern Ireland. Engineering principles apply across the UK, but regulators and company standards differ.
Does the course allow me to enter confined spaces?
No. Confined space entry needs specific training, equipment, permits and rescue arrangements. The course explains the principles so you understand the risks.
Who made the video lessons?
Water companies such as Yorkshire Water, Wessex Water, Thames Water and Anglian Water, plus independent trainers, on their own YouTube channels, credited on the page. WIMES-specific videos are not available, so that part of the course relies on notes and practice tasks. EDWartens did not make the videos.

The Professional Module is five live days of Siemens PLC, HMI and SCADA with an instructor, then a resume session and a CPD certificate.
