Outcome

What you will be able to do

Identify bearing types and read basic designations, fit a bearing correctly, recognise common failure modes, choose and apply lubricant, carry out a basic shaft alignment check, set belt tension and measure chain wear, inspect a gearbox, tighten bolts in sequence with a torque wrench, and run a simple condition check route.

  • Identify bearing types and read a basic bearing designation
  • Fit a bearing without damaging it
  • Recognise the main bearing failure modes
  • Calculate a sensible grease quantity and spot over-greasing
  • Check soft foot and describe the order of an alignment
  • Set V-belt tension and measure chain elongation
  • Tighten a flange in a cross pattern with a torque wrench and run a basic condition check route

Questions

About this course

Do I need a workshop to learn this?
No. The videos show the procedures and the practice tasks are paper exercises. A bench with a bearing, belt and torque wrench helps but is not needed.
Which brand's procedures does the course follow?
The course uses general good practice from bearing, belt and chain makers such as SKF, Gates and Renold. For your own machines always follow the manufacturer's manual and your site's procedures.
Is this an apprenticeship qualification?
No. It is a free knowledge course with an optional £19 EDWartens certificate. Apprenticeships and NVQs are assessed separately.
Does the course cover hydraulics?
No. Pneumatics are covered in the Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer course. Hydraulics are a separate topic.
Who made the video lessons?
Manufacturers and independent trainers on their own YouTube channels, credited on the page. EDWartens did not make them and the creators are not affiliated with EDWartens.

The Professional Module is five live days of Siemens PLC, HMI and SCADA with an instructor, then a resume session and a CPD certificate.
