The role

What a maintenance planner does, and what is on this page

A maintenance planner prepares work before it happens: breaking a job into tasks, estimating the time, ordering spares and tools, arranging permits and access, and fitting it into the production schedule. A scheduler places the prepared work on the calendar. Many sites combine the two, and titles include maintenance planner, planner scheduler, CMMS planner and shutdown planner.

We filter on the job title and leave out project planners, production planners, supply chain planners and aircraft roles, which use the same word for different work. Sites that ask for SAP PM or a named CMMS say so in the advert.

FAQ

Questions people ask

What does a maintenance planner do?

A maintenance planner prepares planned work so it runs smoothly: the task list, time estimates, spares, tools, permits and access, then fits it into the production schedule. The aim is fewer breakdowns and less waiting for parts. The work is mostly desk-based, with regular time on the shop floor.

Do I need CMMS or SAP PM experience?

Many adverts ask for experience of a CMMS or SAP PM, and some accept someone who knows the maintenance work well and will learn the system. Read each advert. A free course on planning, scheduling, CMMS and SAP PM can show you the basics.

What is the route from technician to planner?

Planners often start as technicians or engineers, because they need to know how long jobs take and what they need. Ask to help plan jobs at work, learn the CMMS the site uses, and look at planner or planner scheduler adverts. A senior technician role is a common step before it.

What is the salary of a maintenance planner in the UK?

We have not read a published median for this exact job title, so we do not quote one. Pay varies with sector, shift pattern and region, and a job card on this page shows pay only when the advert states it: we never estimate it.
