Method

How we work it out, and what it is not

Every live UK advert on the EDWartens job board that states a yearly salary in pounds counts once, at the midpoint of its range. Figures under £12,000 (hourly or day rates) and over £250,000 are left out, a role family needs at least 20 adverts to be shown, and every figure is rounded to the nearest £500.

Advertised pay, not earnings

Adverts show what employers offer for open roles, and many do not state pay. For what employees are actually paid, see the ONS figures on our salaries pages and the PLC engineer salary guide.

You may quote these figures with a link to this page. They change as adverts open and close, so please give the date shown above.

Questions

About the pay index

What does a PLC or automation engineer earn in the UK?
In live UK adverts on our board on 30 October 2026, the median advertised salary for PLC and automation roles was £55,000, from 338 adverts that state a yearly salary; half sat between £45,500 and £65,000. Adverts are not pay slips: see the ONS earnings figures on our salaries pages for what people are paid.
How is the index worked out?
We take every live UK advert on our job board that states a yearly salary in pounds. Each advert counts once, at the midpoint of its range. Figures under £12,000 (hourly or day rates) and over £250,000 are left out, and a role needs at least 20 adverts to appear. Figures are rounded to the nearest £500. Nothing is estimated.
Why are advertised salaries different from what people earn?
Adverts show what employers offer to attract applicants for open roles, often for experienced hires, and many adverts do not state pay at all. Earnings surveys such as the ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings measure what employees are actually paid. Both are useful; they answer different questions.
How often is it updated?
The figures are recalculated from the live board every few hours. The date on the page is when they were last calculated.
