The role
What a electrical maintenance engineer does, and what is on this page
An electrical maintenance engineer looks after the electrical side of a plant: motors, drives, switchgear, lighting and control panels. The work is planned maintenance, fault finding and breakdown cover, often on shifts. Many adverts ask for an electrical apprenticeship or NVQ Level 3 and the current wiring regulations (BS 7671, the 18th Edition), and some add PLC fault finding.
The title also appears as industrial electrician, maintenance electrician, E&I technician or electro-mechanical technician, and all are included here. Industrial work differs from domestic and commercial electrical work: the equipment is three-phase motors, drives and switchgear, and the job is keeping production running. Multi-skilled maintenance engineers, who cover mechanical faults too, have their own page.

FAQ
Questions people ask
What does an electrical maintenance engineer do?
They keep electrical equipment running: planned preventative maintenance, fault finding on motors, drives and control panels, and fast repairs when a line stops. Many sites run shifts, so adverts name patterns such as 4-on-4-off or nights.
What qualifications do electrical maintenance engineers need?
Many adverts ask for an electrical apprenticeship or NVQ Level 3, the 18th Edition wiring regulations (BS 7671) and manufacturing experience. Some ask for an HNC. Requirements vary a lot, so read the advert.
Industrial electrician, maintenance electrician or electrical maintenance engineer: what is the difference?
The jobs overlap, and all three titles are listed here. Industrial and maintenance electrician titles are more often hands-on installation, testing and repair. Engineer titles usually add fault finding on drives, PLCs and control systems, and sometimes some supervision. Read the duties in the advert, not only the title.
How is an industrial electrician different from a domestic electrician?
An industrial electrician works on the electrical equipment of a factory or plant: three-phase motors, drives, switchgear, control panels and the circuits around machines, often under permit to work and on shifts. A domestic electrician works on homes. The wiring regulations (BS 7671) apply to both, but the equipment and the working conditions differ.
What is the salary of an electrical maintenance engineer in the UK?
Median gross annual pay for full-time electrical service and maintenance mechanics was £44,785 in April 2026. Provisional. (ONS, Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings 2026, table 14.7a (SOC), 22 October 2026.) Median gross annual pay for full-time electricians and electrical fitters (includes installation and maintenance electricians and electro-mechanical technicians) was £40,717 in April 2026. Provisional. (ONS, Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings 2026, table 14.7a (SOC), 22 October 2026.) Pay varies with sector, shift pattern and region, and a job card on this page shows pay only when the advert states it: we never estimate it.
Can an electrical maintenance engineer get a Skilled Worker visa?
5241 electricians and electrical fitters is a medium-skilled occupation that is on the Temporary Shortage List (standard rate £38,800), which expires on 31 December 2026. The Migration Advisory Committee recommended keeping it for 18 months more (23 July 2026); the government had not decided when we checked. A sponsor licence is not a promise of sponsorship for this job, and whether a particular job qualifies depends on its duties, its occupation code and its pay, which the employer and the Home Office decide. You should never pay an employer or agent for a job or for sponsorship. This is not immigration advice (rules checked 28 October 2026).
